Why I’m Running
On our deepest levels, we are interconnected to each other and all life on this planet. The environmental and social crises of our time call out for urgency of purpose. The Green Party voice needs to be heard as crucial decisions are made. That's why I'm running for State Assembly.
At 53, I've lived in the district most of my life, growing up in Agoura, attending grammar school in Woodland Hills and now being a thirty year resident of Santa Monica where I work as a physical therapist and serve on the Santa Monica Urban Forest Task Force.
A Green since 1990 when I registered at an intertribal pow wow, my platform reflects the Green Party's values:
1. Ecological balance and future focus
- defend against attacks on the California Environmental Quality Act, the citizens' protection from environmental harm
- ensure compliance with AB 32, California's Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which limits greenhouse gas emissions
- keep our treasured state parks open and accessible for all Californians and visitors
- protect our remaining old growth forests, wildlife habitats and open spaces
- defend the ban of offshore oil drilling along California's scenic and irreplaceable coastline
- oppose the siting of liquified natural gas facilities off the California coast
- ban sonar testing, which harms marine mammals, in Calif. waters
- encourage household rainwater harvesting and water conservation
- promote the recycling and reclamation of "gray" water
- work to preserve and restore our streams, rivers, lakes, bays, wetlands and groundwater aquifers and the ecosystems they support
- prepare for the transition to an infrastructure less dependent on oil and more reliant on renewable energy sources, like solar
- encourage organic, urban and community farming
- facilitate bicycle friendly infrastructure
2. Social justice and human rights
- halt the heinous, widespread, and growing crime of human trafficking in California with mandated classes for law enforcement officers to readily spot trafficked victims, training for judges on human trafficking, and laws to enhance successful prosecution of traffickers
- protect farmworkers with stronger regulations and enforcement , especially in regards to pesticide application, safe working conditions, and fair labor practices
- raise the minimum wage to a living wage to the benefit of all Californians
- enact single payer health care, so medical care becomes a right not a privilege
- amend the “three strikes” law to apply to violent felons only
- work with federal authorities to stop inhumane Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids that tear families apart
3. Grassroots democracy and economic justice
- proportional representation and instant run-off voting (where voters can rank their choices of candidates)
- public financing of elections
- non-restrictive ballot access laws
- community based economics, including community supported agriculture programs and co-ops
- legislative majority to pass the state budget
- revised taxation so all pay their fair share
